About Our Presenters

The AAFH presenters have years of teaching and/or clinical experience in Functional, integrative, nutrition, and herbal medicine.

 Judith Boice, ND, LAc, FABNO

Dr. Judith Boice has more than 27 years of clinical experience as an integrative medicine provider and 37 years of teaching in the field of integrative and nutritional medicine. 

She has experience practicing as a primary care provider, working with cancer and HIV+ patients, and women's health conditions. She is a Naturopathic Physician, Acupuncturist, Fellow of the American Board of Naturopathic Oncology, Senior Vitalist, Writer, Speaker, Teacher, and a Health Coach.

She delivered over 1000 talks nationally on women's health and is the author of the books: But My Doctor Never Told Me That!": Secrets for Creating Lifelong Health, The Pocket Guide to Naturopathic Medicine, The Green Medicine Chest: Healthy Treasures for the Whole Family, and Soul Medicine: A Physician’s Reflections on Life, Love, Death and Healing.

Matthew Cavaiola, ND, MS

Dr. Cavaiola is a naturopathic physician with 14 years of clinical experience in the field of integrative, nutritional, and herbal medicine. He specializes in men’s health, endocrine function, and human nutrition.

He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a Master’s Degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Delaware, a Master's Degree in Acupuncture, and a Doctorate Degree in Naturopathic Medicine. He has been practicing as an integrative medicine physician for over a decade and was also an adjunct professor in several colleges, such as Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, as well as an assistant professor at Bastyr University.

Lara Zakaria, PharmD, MS, CNS, CDN, MTM, APhA

Dr. Zakaria is a Functional Medicine pharmacist, nutritionist, and public health professional with 20 years of experience in community pharmacy and 10 years of experience in Clinical Nutrition specializing in Functional Medicine for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases.

She received her Bachelors of Science in Pharmacy, Masters of Science in Functional Nutrition, and Doctor of Pharmacy. She also has a Post-Bachelors Certificate in Medical Herbalism, Certification in Medication Therapy Management, and is a Certified Dietician Nutritionist (CDN) in New York & Connecticut.

David Musnick, MD

Dr. David Musnick, MD is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine and is certified in Functional Medicine. He has been in practice for 29 years and has practiced Functional Medicine for 24 years.

Dr. Musnick gives lectures on many topics in Functional Medicine. He has created and lectured extensively on a Functional Medicine Approach to Pain Management. He has created and lectured on A Functional Medicine Approach to Healing Concussion.

He has written numerous book chapters on Osteoarthritis. He has extensive experience in taking care of patients with Concussion, Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and Mild Cognitive Impairment. He is also an expert in all aspects of Functional Medicine including: Functional immunology, GI problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, insomnia, Fibromyalgia Syndrome, Arthritis, Autoimmune disorders, genomics, Depression, Lipid and Cholesterol problems and the prevention of heart disease.

Dr. Musnick teaches Frequency Specific Microcurrent and how to integrate that modality with Functional Medicine. He taught Sports Medicine and Pain Management at Bastyr University for 16 years and is a very lively and informative speaker.

 

Prof. Liz Lipski, PhD, CNS, FACN, IFMCP, BCHN, LDN

Professor Liz Lipski is an author, researcher, and clinician with 30 years of experience in the field of digestion-related conditions and clinical nutrition.

She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Nutrition and she is the Director of the Academic Development for the Nutrition programs in Clinical Nutrition at the Maryland University of Integrative Health.

She is on faculty for The Institute for Functional Medicine, and the Metabolic Medicine Institute fellowship program. She is also on the advisory boards for the Accreditation Council for Professional Nutrition Education (ACNPE), the American Nutrition Association, the Certified International Health Coaches, and the Autism Hope Alliance.

Dr. Heather Zwickey earned a PhD in Immunology and Microbiology from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center with a focus on infectious disease. She went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship and teach Yale University's medical school.

At the National University of Natural Medicine in Portland, OR, she launched the Helfgott Research Institute which researches the effects of nutrition and natural therapies on the immune system.

Heather also established the School of Graduate Studies, developing programs in research, nutrition, and global health among others. She currently co-leads an NIH funded clinical research training program. She teaches at many universities and speaks at conferences world-wide. She has specific interest in the gut-brain axis in neuroinflammation and psychoneuroimmunology.

 

Tal Cohen DAOM, MS-HNFM

Tal Cohen, DAOM, MS-HNFM is the author of two books: ‘Treating Pain and Inflammation with Functional Medicine: The Complete Clinical Guide’ and The ‘Complete Guide to Removing Toxins & Improving Your Health.’

Tal holds a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine and a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

He has presented on Functional medicine, stem cell therapy, oriental medicine, brain health, lifestyle and nutritional medicine in several venues, such as Oregon Health and Science University, Linfield College of Nursing, National University of Natural Medicine, Oregon Association of Nurses, public libraries, Oregon College of Oriental Medicine, and national conferences.

 Jessica Knese, MS, CNS

Jess Knese, MS, CNS, graduated from University of Colorado at Boulder with dual bachelor degree in Integrative Physiology and Psychology and a Master of Science in Clinical Nutrition and Integrative Health from Maryland University of Integrative Health.

She is certified in Functional Medicine and Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS).

 Michelle Leary-Chang, ND, IFMCP

Dr. Michelle Leary-Chang is a researcher, presenter, and a Functional Medicine Physician practicing general primary care and specialty men’s and women’s health.

She completed training at the Institute of Women’s Health, American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), and the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) in areas of fertility, hormone management for men and women, anti-aging medicine, and metabolic weight-loss.

 

 Jonathan Nadal, ND, MSAOM, LAc.

Dr. Jonathan Nadal earned a Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and a Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine.

Dr. Nadal specializes in integrative medicine and advanced lab testing for the treatment of chronic and inflammatory conditions.

 Brandy Cohen, MSAOM

Brandy Cohen, MSAOM completed a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology with specific interests in clinical Transpersonal Psychology and a Master of Science in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine from Oregon College of Oriental Medicine.

She has an extensive background in Aviation, as an instructor and pilot, and she holds commercial pilot licenses with single and multi-engine flight instructor ratings. In the last 8 years, she has been the Operations Director of A New Way Clinic, an integrative medicine clinic, were she was in charge of operations management and technology.

 Lauren Deville, ND

Dr. Lauren Deville is board-certified to practice medicine in the State of Arizona. She received her NMD from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, AZ, and she holds a BS in Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics from the University of Arizona, with minors in Spanish and Creative Writing. She also loves yoga, piano, and good audiobooks. 

Dr. Deville came to naturopathic medicine in a roundabout way. When she was fifteen, her father died of cancer, after which she planned to devote her life to cancer research. But she quickly discovered that research was not for her. Years later she planned to attend traditional (“allopathic”) medical school, but she was frustrated by her volunteer experience, which seemed to consist only of treating symptoms, rather than searching for and addressing underlying causes. She stumbled upon SCNM almost by accident, but the moment she walked in the doors of her future medical school, she knew that this was what she had been searching for all along.  She considers herself incredibly blessed to have found a career that is also a calling.
