Functional Weight Loss Summit 2024

A Root Cause Approach to Weight Gain

According to the CDC, about 7 out of 10 adults struggle with excess weight (among them 4 out of 10 with obesity).

Beyond the lower self-esteem that many of these individuals are experiencing, being overweight or obese increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, depression, some musculoskeletal conditions, and some cancers.

The Washington Post reported that every year, 45 million Americans try different diets, but when we cut back on calories, our metabolism tends to slow down, we lose muscle mass, and we burn fewer calories.

Recently published studies have reported that weight gain is the result of internal changes in our metabolism due to five major factors rather than a change in our exercise or the number of calories we eat.

One of these factors is thyroid function and associated hormones, which stimulate our basal metabolic rate (in other words, the amount of calories we burn) every day. If your patients have subclinical hypothyroidism or are not converting T4 to T3 properly, they might be struggling with weight gain.

There are 5 major physiological causes of weight gain beyond diet and lifestyle.

A deeper understanding of the connection between these 5 factors and metabolic function is essential to addressing excess body weight and obesity, as well as achieving good health.

Unfortunately, this topic is not taught in medical schools and is not addressed by healthcare providers in conventional medicine.

The results... Many patients continue to struggle with excess weight and obesity.
